Baffles

To guarantee the performance of our sleeping bags in the harshest of conditions, every single Mountain Equipment sleeping bag uses a series of proven design features and construction methods.

Baffle structure is crucial to the performance of sleeping bags, without it even the best quality down will not loft and insulate to its full potential. We use a range of different baffle structures in our bags, each with different profile shapes and heights, and each carefully selected according to the bags end-use and overall fill-weight.

Furthermore we have also carefully tailored the material these baffle walls are constructed from. Helping to give a bag vital structure, allow airflow to circulate and prevent down migrating from one baffle to another, this hidden element of a bags make-up can be critical to both its short and long-term performance. High quality mesh stripping is just one of the many small details that ensure our bags are the best in the world, both inside and out. After many years of hard use the down in your sleeping bag will still be where we intended it to be, supported in exactly the right place.

V Baffle

Structurally the strongest baffle shape available whilst also offering the greatest seam overlap, this is the most thermally efficient baffle shape available. Adding slightly to the overall weight of a bag, this baffle construction is used when unparalleled insulation is required.

Trapezoid 2:1 Baffle Construction

Our classic trapezoid profile that maximises structural strength and stability to offer excellent down control and loft. With its steeply angled side walls and greater seam overlap, this trapezoid ratio maximises thermal efficiency and down loft whilst minimising cold spots.

Trapezoid Offset Baffle Construction

A lighter, more efficient trapezoid profile that balances a greater need for weight reduction and compressibility alongside thermal efficiency. With less steeply angled side walls, this profile uses less internal stripping to remove bulk and weight.

Box Wall Baffle

The simplest method of constructing baffle chambers. This highly effective method keeps weight to a minimum whilst careful management of baffle height allows down to loft to its maximum.

Slant Box Wall Baffle

One of the simplest baffle constructions but thanks to its slanted walls offers improved stability and thermal efficiency over the classic box method.
